Effects of physical activity
Physical Effects
A common reason why people engage in exercising is because of the physical benefits. Physical activity can help to maintain or lose weight. According to the USDA, “Being active increases the amount of calories burned” (“What is Physical Activity?”). The higher the level of intensity, the more calories will be burned. Also, physical activity helps to build or tone muscle. To see results, physical activity must be done on a daily basis. |
Emotional/Mental Effects
Not only does physical activity improve appearance, it can help people boost their mood and energy levels. Staying active helps to decrease the chance of becoming depressed. Along with having a more positive attitude, exercising leads to more self-confidence. Physical activity also improves the quantity and quality of sleep at night. Getting a good night of rest will lead to feeling more alert throughout the day. |

Effects on the Brain
Regular physical activity can have molecular and behavioral effects on the brain. When exercising, heart rate increases, and more oxygen is pumped to the brain. This will increase how well the brain functions. Physical activity can also increase levels of focus. “According to a study done by the Department of Exercise Science at the University of Georgia, even briefly exercising for 20 minutes facilitates information processing and memory functions” (“Physical Exercise for Brain Health”). It is important to vary types of exercises to increase positive results on the brain. |
This video discusses how physical activity affects the brain functions and improves memory ("Physical Activity and Brain Function").
